Bywaydatabase - news

Great news on the bywaydatabase website, there was a risk the domain name would be lost as I could not find the details to transfer it, thus losing all links on that domain name. But thanks to the detective work of a lovely lady at Fast Host I have been able to it track down and get it transferred.

Work is still continuing to get the maps back up and working too.

Steve had some fantastic friends who are keen to get it working again in his memory. Thanks everyone.

  1. Hi Sven's family & friends,
I was shocked and saddened to hear about Steve's death recently, my deepest sympaties go out to you and all who knew him. I discovered bywaydatabase.com and Steve's green laning videos on Youtube about 18 months ago when I first got interested in green laning and have spent many hours watching his videos and using the information on byways on his site. I think the information he provided was superb and his videos were great, he seemed like a very likeable, easy going, down to earth guy and it's very sad that his life has ended in this way. I had 2 friends take their own lives in the last couple of years (both 30 year old males incidentally!?!?) so I kind of understand how shocking, bewildering and confusing it must be for you all.
I do hope bywaydatabase.com continues and those helping out manage to get the maps working again as it is such a good resource for people who share one of Steve's passions.
I would like to help if I can in some small way in the future, perhaps by creating videos of some of the lanes Steve has mapped but hadn't gotten round to doing a video for yet. I had planned to ride all the lanes in Kent in 2013 anyway after being inpired by Steve's missions, maybe now I'll do videos of the rides up to his high standards and you can use them to help complete the database with videos for every lane as was Steve's plan. I am sure there are many other people out there who would also like to contribute videos for the other counties in the South.
Kind regards and my sympathies once again.
    Brian

  2. Thanks for your kind words Brian. It is a sad fact that suicide is the biggest killer of men under 30 in the UK.

Your idea of videos for the lanes sounds a great idea and I am sure there will be some way to link them up, even if I was not able to embed them into the pages.

Let me know when you get out riding and filming and we can take it from there.

You can email us at info@svengalie.co.uk if you want to chat more about your ideas.

    Thanks again
    Best wishes

  3. Hi again Pauline,

The videos Steve had done are still working, embedded in the pages for each lane on bywaydatabase.com. They are hosted on Steve's other Youtube channel "onelungwarrior" (271 videos, mostly rides of green lanes with commentary plus some other tutorials and information) and then the Youtube video is embedded into the page for that individual lane. So it was all Steve's idea, he implemented it and it works really well! It would be great to fill in the blanks and add videos for the lanes he didnt get round to filming.
I'll be in touch once I get a decent helmet cam and mic set up and working and hopefully I can start making videos when the weather improves.
    All the best.

    Brian
